Call for Submissions: STAY COOL: A TRIBUTE TO ELMORE LEONARD

Having recently announced the Table of Contents for LONG DISTANCE DRUNKS: A TRIBUTE TO CHARLES BUKOWSKI, scheduled to be released this Spring, we are now opening for a new anthology to continue the series. Ladies and gentlemen, we present you with STAY COOL: A TRIBUTE TO ELMORE LEONARD.

Elmore Leonard, Miami Bookfair International, 1989

It’s safe to say that we were all deeply impacted by the passing of Elmore Leonard in August. He taught us so much about writing. He excelled at dialogue and his characters never failed to come alive on the page. No one did crime fiction like Mr. Leonard. He was simply the best of the best. We are looking for short stories that do his work justice. Stories that are written in the same spirit and tone. We want cool, eccentric plots and characters running wild. Let us relive Elmore Leonard through our own words.

Also, when writing your submission, please take Leonard’s 10 Rules for Writing into consideration:

  1.  Never open a book with weather.
  2.  Avoid prologues.
  3.  Never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue.
  4.  Never use an adverb to modify the verb “said”…he admonished gravely.
  5.  Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose.
  6.  Never use the words “suddenly” or “all hell broke loose.”
  7.  Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
  8.  Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
  9.  Don’t go into great detail describing places and things.
  10.  Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.

If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.
