Lindsey Goddard, author of “Invitation Only” in Dark Moon Digest 18 and lovely mistress of the macabre answers a few questions.
1. What was the idea behind the story you wrote for DMD 18?
I was thinking about children with behavioral problems who are often labeled “bad” kids. I thought to myself, “It’s not so simple. Kids are much more than just ‘bad’ or ‘good’”. Then it hit me: Of the parents whose lives have been turned upside down by phone calls from principals and warnings from neighbors and police, how many of them would trade their “bad” child for a “good” one if offered the opportunity? The idea clicked with me because, though I hate to admit it, I was a pretty bad teenager and put my own mother through Hell. She never gave up on me, though. Thanks, mom!
2. How do you get writing again when you have a block?
I read, read, read. That’s usually enough to throw some fuel on the flame when it’s burning low.
3. Do you write with music? If yes, what do you typically listen to?
I need either white noise (like my beloved box fan) or music on my ear buds. Most recently, I’ve listened to Hands Like Houses, Black Keys, and Norah Jones to get the words flowing.
4. Besides writing, what else do you like to do with your life?
I love horror movies, art, animals, earth science, and tattoos. If it involves one of those, I’m game.
